Three generations of Rioja know-how at the helm seem to be just the ticket for producing world-class Rioja Reserva.

Enter Bodegas Altanza, as Oscar Martinez now runs the show, and continues to spearhead a great legacy started by his family over 60 years ago. The 2014 Rioja Reserva is a wine that harnesses the pure energy of the region, rooted in a traditional style that sets the stage for greatness as soon as you pop the cork.

Situated in the heart of Rioja Alta, Tempranillo is the only varietal planted on the estate, and though yields are low, the fruit they do pull from this historical property is truly the stuff of Spanish legend.

The 2014 Altanza Reserva is absolutely magical, and is everything we hope for in Tempranillo from a region known for supreme quality and rich in history. Deep garnet in the glass, aromas of raspberry, anise, purple flowers, savory herbs, warm earth, hints of smoke, cured meats, and spiced cherries lead into a lively and luscious texture that oozes with character. Soft tannins have integrated perfectly with time in the bottle, and a thin veil of acidity coats the finish with notes of orange peel and vanilla spice.

Rioja tends to be one of the best values in the wine world even at full price, but throw in a stellar price break and a few scores from the critics, and the 2014 Reserva is one that’s gonna prove its greatness in spades.

A liquid parade of red fruits dripping with old world sensibility and style.

James Suckling

A perfumed nose of mulberries, dried flowers, stones, fresh leather and mushrooms. It’s medium-bodied with fine tannins. Fresh and balanced with a long, vibrant finish. Vegan. Drink or hold.

Wine Spectator

Aromas of cranberry, black cherry and mountainside herbs lead the way in this dark garnet-colored wine. Flavors of cherry, raspberry, vanilla, clove, roasted fennel and orange zest sit among glossy tannins that make way for a pomegranate finish.
